What is Depression?

Most of us will experience periods of feeling low or sad at times. This is often a normal response to situations and the feeling passes. Depression is different as these feelings last for several weeks or months and have a significant impact on your day to day life. 

What are the Symptoms of Depression?

The symptoms of depression can include: 

  • Feeling low, down or hopeless for extended periods

  • Lacking interest or enjoyments in things

  • Lacking motivation

  • Changes in appetite

  • Changes in sleeping patterns

  • Lacking energy or feeling tired

  • Low self-esteem or feeling bad about yourself

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in the speed of your speech or movement

  • Having thoughts about hurting yourself or not wanting to be around

Depression can develop for a number of reasons which may include difficult life events such as illness, bereavement or divorce. Sometimes it may be hard to pinpoint a specific trigger. In CBT, we work together to put the pieces of the puzzle together to make sense of how you are feeling and find a way forward. 

In CBT, we recognise that we can't always control our situation or experiences but we can change the way we respond to things. We focus on thoughts and behaviours and how making changes in these areas can improve mood. Depression may affect the way the way we think and behave in the following ways:

  • Negative outlook about yourself, the world, and the future

  • Minimising or overlooking positives

  • Ruminating. This is where you repeatedly think over negative events or experiences

  • Stopping activities you used to enjoyed

  • Social withdrawal

When depressed, your outlook on life tends to become negative and you can get stuck in negative patterns of thinking. It can leave you feeling drained of energy and motivation. This can make it harder to do things and keep active. When we are less active, this can result in more time to focus on these negative thoughts which further impacts mood. In CBT, we help you learn how to break out of these negative cycles.

We also make changes to behaviour to find ways to reintroduce a sense of enjoyment and achievement into your life. CBT is recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of depression. Other treatment options include antidepressant medication which your GP can offer advice on.
